102J3-961M 'Kortik' Lightweight Assault Power Armor

(Art By Dehzinn) See Also- Armor Systems of the Colonial Pact.

The 102J3-961M 'Kortik' is a lightweight power armor system which entered service in the third month of 961 N.C.C., it is employed by the various entities of the Colonial Pact across many special and general applications in both the civilian and military worlds. Its design is an interesting compromise between the need to protect the operator inside the suit and the need to keep the overall bulk and weight of the design down. As such its developers at Kaar General Resources created a system of effective compromise and paved the way for the development of other such lightweight systems.

The Kortik is a fairly modular, east to repair, and forgiving to operate power armor system, mostly due to various modifications that have been done over its service life since the first versions where produced for the military. Primarily it can be operated either with a specialized pilot suit or without, however it is generally suggested one employs the inner suit if they intend to be inside the power armor for longer then six to eight hours.

An odd mix of semi-organically shaped flex armor and hard plating strategically placed for both equipment and personnel protection, the Kortik is the primary medium-weight power armor employed by the Colonial Pact. Noticeable features include is armored faceplate style helmet, its large backpack unit which houses its main systems, and the fiber like constructs that make up its synthmuscle infrastructure.

Additionally the suit maintains a two quart hydration system (fully filtered) for the pilot (via a straw in the helmet) and can distill more from a compatible atmosphere if needed, otherwise a port on the outside of the suit can be used to refill the reservoir.
Armor
The Vikhr employs an outer layer of sealed hardplate in a complex overlay style of multiple interlocking plates with various layers of softer under armor. The pilot is housed in a sealed pilot suit with a mixture of protections against all conceivable outside threats (NNBC/Vacuum) to provide the user use in all environments with its own dedicated internal life support system. These layers are detailed and described below.
'Apparition' Adaptive Multispectral Coating
Thickness - 2mm
Armor Configuration - Full armor surface coverage.
B980 Power Armor-Type Standard Plate
Thickness - 20mm
Armor Configuration - Full armor surface coverage as the primary armor layer with many interlocking plates.
B990 Power Armor-Type Mesh Armor
Thickness - 10mm
Armor Configuration - The primary outer layer for joint areas of the armor, it is also the primary 'underlayer' covering the entirety of the under surface to serve both as an additional armor layer and as an anti-spall liner.
B800 Anti-Kinetic Dampening Gel System
Thickness - 5mm
Armor Configuration - The interior 'body' layer of the power armor that conforms to the user once the suit is sealed, it serves to protect the user from both kinetic shock and from the forces of high speed maneuvering of the suit.

Thickness - 2mm
Armor Configuration -
Active Protection
CFA Type Array
-
The Kortik employs a power armor scale CFA type shield system of a more compact nature, trading some of its potential protective capability for saving weight and size. However it is still fully capable of acting as the primary active defense system of the Kortik, repelling both energy and kinetic attacks. Its secondary emission, a mild gravimetric field, is more then capable of redirecting or absorbing various natural or man made exotic energy waveforms such as EMP and scalar emissions. Keeping both the user alive and the suit operational. This system is modular and with a standard tool kit can be replaced in the field by the power armor operator.

General Information

Getting In and Out

The Kortik is a two piece system with the armor separating at its midsection directly above the waist, it is capable of being entered without mechanical assistance however most vehicles and shipboard storage systems for power armor will provide entry racks regardless. The first part of entry is stepping into the legs of the suit, once inside the user will pull down on the upper section and slot their arms into the suit as its lowered onto their body. Once joined and signaled it will automatically seal and the halves will link and start up the basic operation systems.

Controlling the Armor

The Kortik's primary method of operation is to directly interface with a DNI port, which on most standard human augments will be located on the back of the neck or on the side of the head. This will be done automatically via a prehensile cable when a user puts on the suit unless the systems have been adjusted otherwise. This allows the user a full cybernetic link with all of the suit's area awareness and communications systems allowing a much higher level of efficiency both in combat situations and civil operations due to the suit not limiting their senses. It also allows for instant adjustment of suit systems via cybernetics on the fly.

Without Direct Neural Interface

Less efficient then using a DNI system it is however still possible to operate the power armor via manual controls present on the platform listed and described below.

  • Intelligent Heads Up Display
    • An eye tracking customizable input mode allowing the pilot to operate various suit functions via eye motion and voice commands via various displays on the inside of the suit's helmet HUD. The sensitivity and the responsiveness can be customized to the operator's needs and preferences
  • Forearm Touch Screen or Holographic Projection Interface
    • Either a contact style touchscreen or an interactive holographic projector for either individual or group use, it allows the operator to tweak the suit's operations in a more precise way. It also allows for complex interface of various weapon systems that would otherwise be complicated by a user without a cybernetic direct neural interface implant.
  • Brain Electro-Chemical Monitoring System
    • Somewhat complex and requiring extensive hour long training operations to build up, it basically allows the computer to predict what the pilot plans or wishes to do based on the suits internal sensors dedicated to monitoring the pilots brain. It effectively allows the operator to broadcast his or her thoughts and intentions and allows the suit to act on these intentions. However this interface can be rather difficult to use between having to build up a profile for the suit to analyze and for the proper line between thoughts and intentions needing to be established.

Armor Internal and External Systems

The following is a compliation of the various sub-systems mounted on the Vikhr Lightweight Power Armor.

Sensors

With the exception of its laser designation system the Kortik is a passive sensor platform, utilizing mainly multi-spectral optical systems paired with a PEMA-type electromagnetic passive array. The suit's computer system is capable of overlaying the various sensor feeds and providing the pilot with a variety of overlays. The computer will also automatically detect and highlight possible threat silhouettes and automatically warn the operator of them.

  • Flip Down Visor Type HOSTS System
    • A hyperdefinition (Up to 100x zoom) multi-spectral sensor system primarily intended for either long ranged scanning or for higher detail work at shorter ranges, it is often used for long range combat especially by those who employ sniper platforms. To work properly however it must be filled down to allow proper alignment with the Face Plate and the user can be vulnerable during this operation if they begin to suffer from tunnel vision on their target.
  • Face Plate Type HOSTS System
    • Rather then being a transparent material the faceplate of the Kortik is actually a large phased array style optical sensor providing a full forward high definition multi-spectral sensor feed. This feed is shown direct and as the primary 'view' for the pilot's HUD on the inside of the helmet.
    • A dedicated helmet mounted targeting optic with multi-spectral capability, it is used to lock and track designated targets within the forward view of the PA. The cylindrical body of the unit also features an infrared laser designation for painting targets when the PA or a nearby friendly unit is employing ordinance that utilize laser tracking.
    • A network of passive sensors mounted on the surface of the PA's armor, these are used to detect various EM wavelengths and are especially useful for tracking possible active sensor systems to being used to target the power armor and providing an early warning feature to the suit's pilot. They can also be used to track and target EM emissions for either engagement by the PA or by other systems utilizing the sensor data generated by the PA.

Power Systems

The Kortik employs two power systems, one primary and one that acts as both a startup battery and as an emergency powersupply in the event the main one cannot be operated or is disabled. The primary is a CSFFC type solid fusion cell utilizing a standardized fuel cell the size of a carbonated drink can. The entire body of the unit is roughly the size of a large coffee thermos and is mounted inside the suit's backpack and is heavily armored, swapping the fuel cell can be done in less then a minute by trained personnel via a hatch on the side of the backpack.

The second power system is a series of CCEC-type capacitors mounted conformally throughout the suit, primarily under the armor panels acting as additional protection due to their high density. These capacitor banks can support the suit for up to 72 hours without the fusion cell operating.

Mobility Systems

The Kortik has a full set of propulsive CMISFD type mini-plasma drive systems that are used for flight and surface high speed hover movement. Two mechanically and electromagnetically steered thrusters are present on the bottom of the suit's backpack, two of the same type are present on the the back of the suit's thighs, and finally a pair are present on the boots. Small puffer duct systems are present on the legs and shoulders to provide movement assistance in vacuum or low gravity situations.

Present on the outside and inside of the 'heel' of the suit's boots are also a pair of 'razor skate' wheels which can be used for high speed movement in situations where the hover jets may not be applicable. An example would be the high density metal teeth of the 'skates' allowing suits to use them to fly up walls and buildings at high speed.

Weapons

The Kortik can employ any of the launchers and small arms listed in the 'Small Arms' section of the Colonial Pact armaments page.

Hardpoints

Below are listed the optional hard point attachment system points the Kortik can employ, these are compatible with the Commonized Exo-Suit and Power Armor Attachments of the Colonial Pact used by the Colonial Pact.

Hardpoints

  • Back Flexi-Points
    • Two such attachment points are located on the top corners of both sides of the suit's backpack unit, these are circular attachment points that allow for mobile mounting systems for either launchers or additional back mounted gun systems. The mobility of this mounting point allows for attachments to fold out of the way when not in use or angle during operation to allow multiple firing modes (such as direct or indirect fire in the case of missile or grenade launchers).
  • Shoulder Hard Mounts
    • Hard mounts present on both of the suit's shoulders, these are typically used for either micro-missile launchers, countermeasure launchers, or as mounts for laser type point defense systems. Applique shoulder armor mounts have also been created for this hardpoint, both official and improvised.
  • Rear Hip Hard Mounts
    • A multi-purpose mount typically attached to the suit's 'belt' line, these systems will come down behind the suit's rear hip and buttocks area in a rear skirt-like manner. They are typically used for utility, such as storage or extra propulsion systems otherwise they serve as decoy launcher systems due to the difficulty of using offensive munitions from such an angle.
  • Side Thigh Hard Mounts
    • Hard mounts present on both of the suit's outer thighs, these are typically used for either micro-missile launchers, countermeasure launchers, or as mounts for laser type point defense systems. Applique thigh and shin armor mounts have also been created for this hardpoint, both official and improvised.
  • Wrist Modular Mounts
    • Utility mounts located on top of the forearms of the suit, these are tasked with either additional electronic attachments or various mobility enhancing pieces of hardware (such as mini-grapple guns).
