This paired with the narrow area in which the data bearing beam of light travels offers limited exposure when transmitting and receiving laser based COM traffic. However the downside to this method is this limited range as well as both communicating platforms needing line of sight in order to exchange transmissions. The beams can also be obscured by stellar or man made phenomena reducing performance or outright blocking the beam.
