The Sundala Starzone

Introduction

The Sundala Starzone is a vast expanse located 850 light-years below the galactic elliptical, consisting of a stellar cluster wrapped in a dark cloud of interstellar gas and dust masking what would later be discovered to be numerous habitable star systems within. For while initially it's nature was merely a scientific curiosity and after humanity's final war in the Solar System a scant desperate hope, humankind soon discovered the regions true nature. What we couldn't observe at distance soon became apparent as the arks holding the human species approached the vast cloud. It was a mask, a cloak to hide what lay beyond the veil and the vast dark matter formation humanity hadn't been able to observe from earth. Within the veil, laid out before the eyes of those first settlers, was a vast field of star systems. Systems which were later found to be interlinked with gateways created by a now long gone alien race that would soon be known as the Ozymandians. Each system, clearly curated for a race remarkably similar to humanity in needs and biochemistry, hosted at least one habitable world. Each featuring a already planted common biosphere who's base chemical makeup was compatible with both earth life and humanity.

For the human species, who's entire 'hail mary' venture had been based on a nearly two-century old observation event, it was a salvation and a second chance. While numerous systems with potentially habitable worlds existed near Sol, the simple reality when the survivors of the Last Solar War was none held anything that would support human life. So the twelve million survivors of the human race spread out among the systems, old lines blurred, new societies emerged, and as the centuries ticked by new divisions rose and by the year 2710 A.D. humanity found itself in much the same situation it had on the eve of The Final Sol War. Tensions, mutual hatreds, and even some ancient divisions from Sol all playing into mutual rivalries and hatreds.

Strategic Situation of the Starzone

Key Information

A vacant hideaway and shelter for a long absent alien civilization, the question is… where did they go?
- Ellen Ochoa, a Meridian archeologist and anthropologist circa 2415 A.D.

A Matryoshka Formation

Whether its a natural occurance or one that was intentionally shaped by means beyond our understanding, the starzone's nebula is dark and hard to spot unless one knows what they're looking for. The structure's vast dark clouds of gas and shaped structures of dark matter are laid out in a way which mostly hides the systems that lay within and its surrounding formations of dark matter make most approaches with FTL drives hazardous at best and lethal at worst.

A Darkmatter Shell

A massive halo of exotic particles, the dark matter 'shell' wrapped around the starzone was one of the major delays for humanity accessing the cluster of stars and systems that lay at the formation's center. It's shape varies and changes as the starzone orbits the galaxy but overall there are only two main approaches who's dimensions change and twist with the interstellar winds. FTL outside of these carefully curated points is next to impossible due to the concentrated structure of the formation's dark matter forcing one to jump along the invisible tunnels of normal density space.

Carefully Curated Garden Worlds

Nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, trace gases.. all within human norms, some animal and plant life, all of it looks like the start of a colonization effort… but I guess the residents never arrived.
- Unknown planetary scout during the initial landings on planet Jamestown circa 2363 A.D.

Where is the Starzone located?

1.5 Kiloparsecs below the galactic elliptical, roughly below the Orion Spur in a gaseous tendril of of the Perseus Arm. While mostly enclosed in cold dark nebula a few of the systems were open to observation in a freak gravitational lensing event witnessed by Aadrika Sundala, a deep space astronomer stationed near Pluto. Using various techniques she and her team determined the cluster of systems held an unusual number of worlds displaying signs of habitable atmospheres and liquid water. Her discovery would sit off to the side as a curiosity for nearly half a century.

What happened to earth?

“Polluted and scoured for a start, it was still viable for some agriculture and of course dealing with billions of us. Then came the final war, nukes and kinetic bombardment, first burned to embers and then dropped into the deep freeze of an impact nuclear winter. They still managed to evacuate some, their stories preserved for the record. But our pale blue dot is more or less useless for at least the next several thousand years.”
- An unnamed survivor of the Solar System
