VN-99C 'Cobalt-C' Coil Carbine

See Also - Armaments of the Colonial Pact

The carbine or 'compact' variant of the Cobalt weapon family, it is a dual mode heavy caliber coil gun system intended for service either with boot infantry units or with the flick of a switch service with power armor or exosuits via the rifles alternate output mode. While trading the increased weight of such a weapon and the reduced ability due to having to operate as a regular infantry weapon (IE the weight cannot exceed what a man can carry) it still employs a large caliber projectile and allows those employing it to only have to stock one weapon system. The Cobalt-C features a very effective electromagnetic coil system to serve as the primary means of firing its projectiles, as stated previously these are large 13.5 mm EM rounds. Primarily intended to stop targets with one or two hits the weapon is non-the less capable of controlled low RPM automatic fire. What makes the weapon and the cobalt family of systems unique is a easily changed barrel system allowing for the installation of a very effective sound neutralizing barrel shroud reducing the noise impulse of the weapon down to something akin to a human cough.

Below are listed and described the various mechanisms and interface systems of the Cobalt-C system.

Weapon Mechanisms

  • Linear Counter-Recoil System - An inbuilt moving counterweight to reduce the force of the weapon's recoil on the user, it is powered and operated by the same system that gives the rifle its electromagnetic boost.
  • Weapon Attachment Rails - There two rail attachment systems on the Cobalt-C, the first being one below the barrel and mostly intended for foregrips or additional illumination or laser devices. The second being the on characteristic 'flat top' rail mount on top of the weapon. Both employ contact digital link systems.
  • Loading/Unloading Mechanism - The Cobalt-C is a magazine fed weapon, said device both serving as the battery system for the rifle's coil mechanisms and the source of its ammunition. Loading is done via a computer controlled electrically operated mechanism which pulls a round up from the magazine and places it at the beginning of the linear coils.
