-Cascadia was one of the younger colonies in the Anglo-American Union of Star Systems, located two jumps away from from one of the main intra-system jump gates it had avoided being a objective in nearly every war to involve the AAU both against fellow humanity and the century old emerged Ev'Chen. Linked to the rest of the Union by slower manufactured jump gates it serves as somewhat of a secondary 'back' route toward the inner AAU star systems, stopped at by those seeking cheaper passage as well as a chance to trade for the various local manufactured goods and agricultural products the outer colonies where known for. +[[fic:world_of_eideon|More information!]]\\

-Two habitable worlds exist here; Albeckan alpine world with a cooler than Sol norm climate being the second to be settled and only moderately developed with its largest focus on agriculture as well as continuing to grow its population, which as of its last census was less than hundred thousand+They hadn't known what they'd be walking intothen again rarely was that information accurate even when they did get it but had he known he probably would have opted to pass on what was supposed to be simple prisoner pick up and transport

-The other is more tropical world and the first to be settled. Known as Oshimait is an example of world slowly growing beyond its original colonial roots slowly tipping over into a more urbanized and industrious world. This steady planned expansion and growth is centered on a city that bares the planet's name, home to nearly a million souls with ancestry and ethnicity from both the west coast of the former US territories and regions of East Asia. From above its building plan is clearly circular, building outward from a bay with a vast orbital elevator and space port complex. Glistening steel, glass, and advanced structures jut up from the coastline and gradually lower the farther one gets from the core of the city. A peaceful bustling center that had yet to experience war either by luck or simply being out of the way, the hour glass of fate on that particular string however had just run out+Their target was man by the name of Linus Grissupsimple but expensive confidence schemes and few incidents involving wire fraud wouldn't have registered on the Union Marshall Service's radar normally but when one angers those on high some strings are pulled.

-{{:colonial_pact:sarp_spacer.png?40|}}+Both of them hadn't thought much of the man that stared back at them from their data tablets and they where briefed, a small guy, thin and caucasian with one slight lazy eye that he probably played toward the human tendencies toward sympathy

-==== POV Patrolman Robert Yulles - Oshima City Civil Security Forces - District 39 'Ginza' ==== + In this case it involved one Inspector by the name of Lawrence Miller, a cautious experienced man with ten year stint in the Union Colonial Marines behind himThe other being rookie who Miller had taken to calling Frez short for Frezno Garzina, fresh from the academy still slowly going through getting the rougher edges of his tendencies out.
------ +
-It was another hot broiling day with heat waves already starting to dance on the blacktop of the asphalt that made up most of the district's roadways. The sun glittered on the upper stories of the moderately high buildings as it rose in the eastorange light dancing down to the lower floors that terminated at their bases in variety of shopfronts or merely the entrance ways to larger vertical shopping centers. Ginza was mostly commercial district located between a high rise residential area closer toward the bay and one of the main rapid transit entry points of the city used by the agricultural interests that blanketed the land toward the north, west, and southAs result shopping for both goods and fresh food stuffs was common place despite the heat. All around the district individuals and families where already starting their days trek around the district, it was the start of the weekend and for those on a conventional work week it meant time to relax or restock+

-Of course this was no comfort to sole figure leaning against the front of his grey and blue painted street patrol vehicle, staring with envy into the window of a food shop as the older figure inside got their orderHis name was Robert Yulles, eleventh son of a colonial native and a newly minted patrolman of the Oshima City Civil Security ForcesAt just over six feet he was taller than average for the planet's population, his features where a mixture of Eurasian genetics resulting in dark brown hair and a slightly tanned complexion+Their destination was a backwater colonial world known as Cascadium, one of two worlds in the Toole Star System and the more neglected of the twoWhile habitable it was the 'cooler' of the two worlds with more alpine climate compared with the warm temperate to tropical tendencies of its closer sister world. The simple result being most of the money, settlers, and interest went to the other world leaving those who favored smaller settlements and wide open skies to find their own way on the frontier worldThere was some economic interest however, various corporate bodies had started mining efforts on the sole inhabited continent. These brought sources of revenue for the dozens of small town sized settlements who's sole export was the spare food stuffs they grew or raised on slowly expanding farmsteads

-He wore the standard uniform of the Oshima City Security Forceeffectively their police department. More or less a zip up grey coverall with padded elbow and knee pointshis sleeves where rolled up to his biceps. His gear vest covered most of his chest with a quasi kinetic protective vest and various utility pockets that held everything he needed for the jobHis gun belt held a full size caseless combat pistol, prisoner zip tiesnon-lethal options, and spare magazines for all+Their first destination was the largest 'city' on the planet, one part cargo terminal, one part spaceport, and one part sin it was like most backwater worlds, where the world of interstellar transportation overlapped with the simpler lives of those who where slowly carving their way into this new worldNaturally it was where most came to trade for goodscash, and if time permitted to entertain themselves.

-Patience by now had started to run thin as the steady flow of sweat from his brow mixed with the wet feeling slowly radiating from his armpits, it never took to long to stain a uniform this time of year. At least thats what the man finally handing over a wad of bills inside had said. The younger man's fingers drummed against the hood as the door finally opened+Of course all these sights, sounds, and smells hit them at once as they stepped off the converted military dropship and into the hot air of the planet's summer evening. A storm had moved over in the last few hours, rolling off the vast southern plains that made up half the continent and leaving wet tarmac and dripping water in its wake

-The man that walked out carried many of the same featuresthe chin line, the eye shape, though the color had come from his mother. Though he was older looking, appearing to be in his thirties with the ever slight touch of age starting in his face and body. What would be odd to someone from a few centuries earlier would be that he was actually in his mid eighties+"Jesus what a dump!" Frez commented as his uniform's boot nudged a hardy bunch of grasses coming up through a hole in the poured insta-crete that made up most of the landing area. It caused Miller to huff a bit, he'd grown up in a place like this. It had left him with slight southern bray in his accent that played up from time to time

-He was the patrolman's father and the head of the local security bureau and had pulled quite a few strings to get him assigned to a district under his perview as well as get to ride along on his first dayHe smirked at his son and held up the over sized brown paper bag in his left hand while cradling a pair of take out drinks in the other+"Oh you haven't seen run down yet son, just wait till we get down the road a ways." He said, looking over and grinning at the younger man, he had to stop himself from laughing as Frez let out another sigh, a city boy was a city boy. And the somewhat short Hispanic had grown up and cut his teeth working security inside one of the more crowded space mining habitats that some inner rocky worlds played host too. It turned out he had a talent for the investigative side of things and after a few recommendations they'd pushed him on Miller post academyNow they where on their third assigment together and the small adjustments to this methods where starting to show.

-"Best deli-shop on this side of the main transit!" He said jovially as he walked past his sulking offspring and to the drivers side+Both men paused, watching as a pair of black 4x4 light vehicles pulled around the corner of a nearby building and headed straight for them. They were moving fast but smartly, the military grade tires throwing up a thin mist behind the lightly armored retired military transports.

-The younger of the two rolled his eyes and pushed off the front of the patrol carmoving toward the passenger side+'The welcoming comity?' Miller wondered as he slipped his thumbs into the edges of his uniform's blue tactical vest. Waiting and watching while Frez let out a nervous whistleas nervously shifting from foot to foot. Nobody liked being driven up on, especially on backwater colonies.

-"Could have left the car runningheats murder today." Robert's voice was lower, thankful to feel the air conditioning start up as he settled into the seat and the older of the two turned the keys awakening the electric drive with whine.+“What do you think boss? Those are some relics.” Frez saidhis voice low as the lead vehicle pulled up a dozen or so feet in front of them and slid to halt

-Yulles the older shook his head"The cells on these old Y-21s don't like sitting still in the heat, besides its not like it'll kill you." He joked back, already pulling the car away from the curb. Smiling at the memories of his first time out on patrol, glancing over at his youngest out of his 'second set' of children+Miller shrugged, running his hand through his short cut brown hair“Not everyone has the money for the fancy shit Frez.”

-It was common with both the longer lifespan and general expectations of colonization to produce multiple groups of offsrping, some just carried on until the normal human issues of aging took back over in their 140s to 160s. Others would have few wait until all had 'left the nest' and then start againJohn Yulles the older and his wife Margeret where the latter.+The second vehicle had stopped slightly off to the side as the first's passenger door was pushed open from within. It revealed a red haired man of average build in a faded old pattern military jumpsuit with a pattern Miller hadn't seen since his first year in the MarinesHe eyed both of the marshals for a moment before speaking with a heavy Oceanian accent, “Marshals Miller and Garzina I presume?” a small smirk on his face as he saw the discomfort in the latter of the pair.

-"So why'd you pick this old bucket anyways?" Robert askedfingering a hole in some of the fabric of the seat+“That would be we!” Miller announcedsmiling back at the man before stepping forward, one hand sliding on top of the door before leaning against it“You the ride all the way in or do you just want to hand us the keys and send us on our way?”

-John smirked"Builds character! And this is probably what your going to get stuck with for your first year, new guy and all." He said as his hand rummaged in the bag for one of the sandwiches. Finally turning his gaze from the road for a moment+“The first I'm afraid marshalbelieve me I don't like the idea of a six hour road trip either but all the same its nice to meet someone with your reputation.” He said as he extended a hand over the center console of the AFV, it was gloved with the sort those expecting trouble wore along with other assorted gear

-"DAAAAAADDDD!!" +“Likewise Sheriff Nott, you got a file to ya know.” Miller said as he returned the gesture both men sizing the other up before the grip ended and Miller climbed up into the vehicle, a decently sized kit bag finding its way into a nook as he took his seat. His newer blue colored gear contrasting against the well worn one Nott wore that was probably already past its time.

-The scream next to him shot his gaze back to the road as the rapidly approaching rear of a cargo truck sent his booted foot into the brake, the car sliding to the stop in front of a snarl of traffic. Father and son looked at each other before climbing out of the vehicleAhead of them for at least two hundred feet the road was grid locked, past it inside one of the main intersections was a structure. Rectangular and rising up at least five stories and nearly as wide, its construction looked like stone blocks, weathered, old with a massive empty section at its center. A dark shadowy center section that seemed to stretch on into a void. Both men looked at eachother and started to move forward.+The vehicle shifted as Frez climbed into the seat behind Millerlooking between the pair of older men before buckling into the seat.... notcing it was a harness instead of the simple restraints most passenger vehicles had

-"Robert call it in." John said as he started yelling at people to stay in their vehicles and for various patrons of the shops on either side to get back inside as they pair of officers advanced. He heard the outgoing COM call a moment later mixing in with a chorus of identical ones, of course some had ignored them, civilians in throngs or individuals moving up to look at the odd objectBy the time they reached the front of the crowd faint shapes inside of the object where moving out of ithuman-like shapes+Nott must have seen him, “Sometimes we don't get to stick to the roads and the four point is better, unless you enjoy getting slung around as one of these gets intimate with the terrain.” Experience bled through the statement as Frez let out a gulpstowing his own kit a little more secure then simply resting on the seat next to him.

-They could do little but watch dumbfounded as the first 'creature' stepped from the shadows, green skinned and wearing a mixture of medieval clothing and what looked like mail armor. He wore a sword on his hip, a small shield, and held a bow in one hand, yellow eyes stared out at the crowd as more emerged from behind him+After some fiddling both men settled in as the AFV began moving off the landing pad and into the light traffic of the late afternoon

-"This is a joke right?" Robert said staring at the thing"First day joke right?" This time he shook his head, trying to banish the image of.... goblins? Orcs? +The small but growing city's name was Burris after the ship who's hull gave it the first building materials though now the prefab habitats and drop buildings were giving way bit by bit to more permanent structures.  Nothing high rise yetjust enough to house the sprawling population of seventy thousand or so as new settlers not looking to work the land trickled in to feed the growing service industry to support the firstSoon the preformed concrete of the planned city roadways gave way cheaper construction as they moved out of the city proper and into the outskirtsSingle story residential and commercial was on either side before that to thinned out into rolling cropland, all the while idle conversion passed between the threeMostly Frez asking the Sheriff about the female half of the population with the occasional note from Miller that they'd probably look down on his 'scrawny beaner ass'. Eventually the insults settled and Frez found the perfect angle against the tinted window for a nap.

-Next to him, his hand undoing the clasp on his holster staring almost as widely as his son John gave a simple shake of the head+It was quiet that way for a little while as the sun slipped down below the horizon in front of them as the four lane road stretched out in front of them, nothing but the headlights of the second vehicle behind them

-Both men's headsets where squawking, the calm morning routine service radio traffic having gone into hyperdrive. Units where respondingalready a police VTOL hovered five hundred feet up its optic providing direct feed in three spectrums. From the father and son's level and their eagle eyed view it would be recorded as the largest of the creatures raised its arm, the hundred or so that had pushed out from the cavernous object all notched their bows and raised them. Some in the crowded reacted and began to back away, Robert had drawn at some point as his father had done the same, screaming into his mic for backup as the first volley flew into the helpless on lookers. +Nott broke the ice“So you have any kids?”

-{{:colonial_pact:sarp_spacer.png?40|}}+Miller inhaled slightly, “Didn't quite get that far, almost had a wife but I guess she found something better during one of my deployments way back when. I guess thats just how things work out.” While is face was less than serious, staring off into the night his voice betrayed the hate he had for it.

+“I've got two, the wife and them are back in town. Local girl met her after I 'retired' out this way.” Nott replied, his eyes never leaving the road.

+“You ever miss it?” Miller asked, looking toward Nott. “The Marines I mean.”

+Nott made a small chuckle, “The brotherhood, the guys, definitely, not the upper level bullshit or the politics, kinda why I like it out here.” His hand gestured out at the slices of illuminated grassland on either side. “The agri guys mostly keep to themselves and have their own security teams, I only get called when something actually needs a legal decision or something is spinning into something bigger than they can handle.”

-==== Introducing 67th STIR Team, Witch-2 Biped Tank Team, and the Gleese Ranch (Alert Status Achieved) ==== +Whether or not Nott wanted to admit it, he and his two hundred or so 'agents' represented the only true law and order outside of the planetary militiahence the Sheriff title
------ +
-They had been rotated home for less than a day, a day most had spent taking to the local night life and for those with families heading out to visit them. For thirty-five year old First Lieutenant Martin Vega of the 67th Strategic Technological Investigative and Retreval (STIR) Team it had meant a days worth of debriefing and filling out contact reports. Hispanic with lighter skin but darker hair, he stood a few inches under six foot and had a look that could be called average until one looked into the bright blue color of his synthetic eyes. A gift from the corps after a grenade had gone off a little to close, the other unnatural feature was the slot on the back of his head. A standard issue direct neural interface system with some wireless capability, giving him a permanent data link and augmented reality view of his world+

-Of course that didn't matter after forty eight hours of wakefulness, nearly half of it sitting in conference rooms across from men older describing the Marii artifacts they'd had to destroy in place before the Ev'Chenii arrived on location. Black bags hung underneath his eyes as he sucked another drag of nicotine into his body. Medical science had removed the health cost and the possibility of addiction and the rush and the calming of frayed nerves meant that tobacco was a common catharsis in the Union military forces. Drifting deeper into the hard plastic of the bench he let his brown eyes wander out onto the skyline of Oshima City some miles away, the sun was already rising, sending its rays against his tired flesh. He knew it wouldn't be much longer until his '75' pattern coveralls would be soiled by his own sweat. Vaguely he realized he didn't care, flicking some ash from the end of the paper wrapped tobacco as his eyes drooped and fatigue rushed in to claim him.

-The sound of grinding tires on asphalt and a trio of familiar voices roused him, it felt like only minutes had passed but the sun was higher in the sky and.... smoke? He blinked and rubbed his eyes as the soft blue HUD filled in at the edges of his vision. Whispy tendrils creeped upward from within the bounds of the Oshima City's commercial districts. The base, specifically Camp Nathan, sat further inland on the foot hills rising up into this continents central range giving all its residents an elevated view of the urban landscape some thousand feet lower and five miles away.
